LAMBORGHINI ESPADA (1968 - 1978) MODEL REVIEW


The Lamborghini was a grand tourer brought out in 1968 with a V12 engine. There was a void in the four seater sportscar range and Ferruccio Lamborghini wanted a four seater luxury cruiser. So, the Espada was born with many innovative features like the automatic transmission to handle the powerful engine's torque.
From 1968 to 1978 three variants were produced with vast improvements in the interior and some alterations to empower the engine. It was priced at $33,900 when first introduced to the car world and is now available for $ 15000 - $ 30,700.
The final model in 1978 was excellent and drew much interest and admiration from car lovers. A total of 1217 units were produced before it was halted with people still nursing a hope that it will come back into production. The few that are on the road still attract stares and astonished gapes.

Engine:
 

1. The engine was very powerful being the V12.
2. Spewing out 325 bhp and a torque of 275.8 lb/ft.
3. The Espada is none the less for speed compared to contemporary cars cruising at 150 mph with automatic transmission and an unusual gear ratio of 3 drive, 1 and reverse.
4. The acceleration from 0 - 100 Km is easily attained in 6.6 seconds.

Interior:




1. The interior is very large and roomy and luxury features like Air-conditioning, Automatic climate control, Electric windows, Powered and Heated front seats, Cruise control, Navigation system and Trip computer.
2. This 2 door coupe and four sitting and good sound system in Compact Disc. Many features added in the series III models like the Sun roof and Power steering.
3. Airbags of different types were available like Side-impact head airbags for front seats, an exclusive airbag for the driver, Side airbags and Front head restraints, Child safety locks and Door beams for side impact.
4. The upholstery was completely leather and the steering wheel was made from aluminum which was later changed to wooden with a more upright center console in the series III models.

Exterior:




1. The car is 73 inches width provides roomy interiors.
2. A semi monocoque of steel sheet structure that is shaped like rear windows and an aluminium hood.
3. This 2-door super sedan and standard 15" wheels with magnesium hubs and Pirelli Cinturato tyres. 4. Four disc brakes in all wheels.
5. Other features include Heated, Electric door mirrors, Xenon headlamps, Fog lamps, Tinted glass and Rear window wiper.
6. In the last of the Espada series III, black bumpers were installed for safety regulations and the front grill and taillights changed slightly.
7. A sunroof was also made available and its not very popular.
